July 29, 1954 The Fellowship of the Ring
On this day, one of the high holy days of geekdom, a tome that still defines Epic Fantasy was first published in the United Kingdom. The Story was not originally meant to be a trilogy and Tolkien first envisioned it to be a single volume divided into 6 sections or books. His publisher made the decision to create 3 separate novels of the work and was the one who named the final volume The Return of the King. Tolkien thought the name gave away too much of the story and thought it better titled as The War of the Ring.
The titles for the original sections of The Fellowship as proposed by Tolkien were:
The First Journey or The Ring Sets Out
The Journey of the nine Companions or The Ring Goes South
